The Man On The Street
69
Eyes full of sorrow
He walks the streets
Hungry and alone
And cries in his sleep
For long forgotten dreams
Of big things
Of places he wanted to see
And things he wanted to do
And who he wanted to be
Far beyond his dreary life
Big dreams gone sour
Amidst the loss of power
This hotel’s just a stop
Along the way
Til he gets kicked out
When they begin to shout
About his dirty mess
And he can’t pay the rent
Dirty clothes
Wrinkled on the sink
Oh, man, how they stink
And the place is a mess
And he’s only half dressed
And the trash lies falling
As the bugs eat the bread
And crawl on his bed
He can’t get up
To clean it up
Cuz his body aches
And his head’s asleep
And he feels a mess
In his loneliness
But he can’t stand up
In his drunkenness
And he has no spark
To pick it all up
Cuz he’s not lit up
Cuz he’s lost all will
And he’s lost all hope
And he just can’t cope
Can't pay the rent
All his money's been spent
Nowhere to go
Oh, my God, oh, no
Then he's out on the street
With nothing to eat
And he's tired and spent
Upset about the rent
And nowhere to go
So his body aches
And feels like lead
He can hardly walk
Full of dread
So lies down on the street
Feeling so beat
And he starts to sleep
And the nightmares start
And they never let up
In a darkened world
Of dreams and demons
Pulling him downward
Messing him up
Full of crazy dreams
That make no sense
But leave a bad taste
And carry the scent
Of war and hate
And memories that grate
And the scars he can’t heal
As he tries not to feel
The pain.
And he tries to get up
And get something done
And shake the dreams
That haunt him
He forces a walk
In his stiffness
Better than the dreams that haunt him.
So he goes for a walk
But he can’t stop the thoughts
And the feelings come
And they stay for a while
Then linger on
And the memories with them
And his body aches
He can barely walk
And he hurts all over
And begins to cry
And people walk by
And no one cares
Cuz his hair’s a mess
And he’s just a bum
And they’re afraid of him
He walks for hours
Not knowing what to do
He tries to think
But he just wants a drink
To ease the pain
Nowhere to go
Nothing to do
Can't find a job
In his dreary state
So he just has to wait
For what he doesn't know
And he feels so low
His work was his life
And he misses his wife
And the life that he lost
And everything costs
And there's nothing to eat
And nowhere to go
And he just doesn't know
What to do.
Then he goes to the park
As the sun goes down
On his dreary life
And he misses his wife
It gets really late in the park,
When he hides behind the tree
In the park
Til the next day dawns
And he wakes up
To his awful life
Better get out
Before the day dawns
On his hiding place
That he found last night
After the fight
When they kicked him out
Of the seedy hotel
Like a dirty dog
And spit on his crying bones
Gotta get out on the street
Before they find him here
Where he should not be
Under this tree
Out in the park
Where he’s hidden in the dark
With no work to do
His mind just wanders
To dreary things
And he just can’t shake it
Beneath his skin
Memories cry out
Of really bad scenes
And bloody dreams
With really dark themes
And he hates his life
And he lost his wife
When he lost his job
And they took the house
And he’s lost all hope
And he feels a mess
In his wretchedness
He once was someone
Just like them
Walking to work
In those tall high rises
With big dreams
Of success and fortune
Feeling like someone
In his suit and tie
All dressed up
For something.
